Watford, ON — On July 16, 2024, intense rainfall led to substantial flash flooding, causing the closure of Highway 402 near Watford, ON. This extreme weather event resulted in significant disruptions and raised safety concerns for residents and commuters.
Earlier in the day, MPP Steve Pinsonneault visited Warwick Township to assess the damage and meet with local officials. Mayor Todd Case thanked MPP Pinsonneault for meeting with him and Councillor Morris to discuss the issue. “Council and I appreciate MPP Pinsonneault taking the time to see firsthand the impact of the flooding,” Mayor Case said. “This is the second significant rainfall event in Warwick in less than two years. Councillor Morris and I emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure funding to address necessary improvements for our community.”
The heavy rain began in the early morning hours, quickly overwhelming local drainage systems and resulting in significant water accumulation on the highway. This necessitated the closure of Highway 402 in both directions, as emergency crews worked diligently to ensure the safety of motorists and evaluate the extent of the flooding.
Environment Canada issued several weather warnings throughout the day, highlighting the seriousness of the storm and urging residents to take appropriate precautions. This extraordinary weather event exceeded typical regional patterns, marking it as one of the most severe in recent memory.
Emergency services were swiftly mobilized, with coordinated efforts to manage the situation. Local authorities, including the Ontario Provincial Police and municipal emergency response teams, were on-site to assist stranded motorists and redirect traffic.
By the afternoon on July 16, Highway 402 was successfully reopened. The quick response of emergency services and the cooperation of the community played a critical role in managing the crisis and minimizing potential harm.
Steve Pinsonneault, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, expressed his concern for those impacted by the flooding and praised the efforts of emergency responders. “Yesterday presented an extraordinary challenge for our community,” said Pinsonneault. “I am grateful to the emergency services and everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents. Their dedication and swift action were key in mitigating the impact of this severe weather event.”
MPP Pinsonneault emphasized the importance of preparedness in facing such natural disasters. “It is crucial that we remain vigilant and continue to prioritize the safety of our community. I am committed to supporting our efforts to strengthen our infrastructure and emergency response capabilities,” he stated.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions and follow any advisories from local authorities.
