Chatham-Kent – The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has ordered a comprehensive Environmental Assessment (EA) for the expansion of York1 Environmental Waste Solutions project near Dresden. This decision follows extensive community opposition and concerns over the potential environmental impacts, particularly on the Sydenham River ecosystem.
The proposed expansion of the site requires an EA to evaluate the potential environmental, social, and economic impacts. The EA process is essential to ensure that any potential adverse effects on the environment are identified and mitigated before proceeding. Key reasons for the necessity of this EA include protecting water quality, safeguarding endangered species, and ensuring community health and safety. The landfill’s proximity to the Sydenham River, a critical waterway for local ecosystems and communities, poses potential risks.
Steve Pinsonneault, MPP, commends the community for their efforts in advocating for a thorough assessment process. “The health of our environment and the well-being of our residents must come first. This comprehensive EA is a crucial step in ensuring that all potential impacts are carefully considered and addressed.”
