Dresden Landfill Proposal

DRESDEN, ON – Given the uncertainty around cross-border trade conditions due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs and threat of tariffs, the province is working to increase internal waste management capacity to ensure long-term stability and reduce reliance on international systems. As part of the broader Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, the provincial government is proposing changes to the York1 waste project located just outside of Dresden.

“I know this decision is disappointing for many residents—I share those concerns. As a councillor, and now as your MPP, I have always prioritized the well-being of our community and strongly believe in the power of local advocacy,” said Steve Pinsonneault, MPP for Lambton—Kent—Middlesex. “I am actively engaging with the Minister of Environment to ensure that the unique perspectives and needs of Lambton—Kent—Middlesex are taken seriously throughout this process.”

What is not changing is that the project will continue to remain subject to strong provincial oversight and other regulatory requirements including Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECA) under the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) and Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA).

The community is encouraged to formally share their comments through the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO). Public input is currently being accepted until May 17, 2025. You can access the proposal here: Removing Environmental Assessment Requirements for the York1 Waste Disposal Site Project | Environmental Registry of Ontario.
